Migrating NTFS permissions to SMB

Comment:

Suse 9 exists as SMB server and is a member of the Win2k Domain. I set up SMB server to use Win2k PDC as a password server for user authentication. SMB will also create Unix system users based on their NT logon if theyre not present in the smbpasswd file.
Next step was to migrate current NTFS shares to SMB server but i have hard time setting permissions on those folders. When files are copied or moved over all of the permissions are reset. Is there a way or perhaps a better practice in setting up SMB server to use existing NTFS permissions, so there is no need to be reconfigure permissions folder after folder once the directories are migrated? Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Try this site, it has some link info near the bottom you might find useful.

But I have to say, you've already done more with SAMBA than anyone else I know of.

As far as I remember with NTFS, copying the files from one volume to another (eg from drive a to drive b) always resets the permissions anyway. You might want to ask this on the NT forum to see if it is true and if there is a work around. Possibly zipping or ghosting the drive might help.

Thank you for replies!
As far as NTFS permissions they should be retained by the file if moved to another NTFS partition. Unfortunately SMB server is not running NTFS. Its running Linux native FS.

Not sure if it is really appropriate, but perhaps you could re-partition and use the umsdos filesystem instead?

Hmmm....just came across this on the net:
# When files and/or folders are moved within the same NTFS partition, they retain their permissions.
# When files and/or folders are copied within the same or between NTFS partitions, or moved to another partition altogether, they inherit the permissions of the destination folder.
# When the folder and/or the file is moved to another partition, the user who performed the move will become Creator Owner.
# When files and/or folders are moved within the same volume they retain their original permissions
# When files and/or folders are moved across different volumes they inherit the permissions of the destination folder.
