mepis repeated soundserver crash

Just installed mepis. As soon as the OS loads soundserver starts crashing repeatedly and doesn't stop. I've never used Linux before. I don't even know how to disable sound drivers or anything. The sound works, but my active window onscreen is switched to the crash window every few seconds. I have searched for answers with no results but the following links appear to point to people with a similar/identical problem.

You can disable it under control Center. Find Sound system option and disselect Enable the sound system.
