mbr messed up - help pls

my setup are:
hda - pri hdd with winME + 2K
hdb - sec hdd with RH6.2

recently i altered the lilo.conf for boot=/dev/hda8 and issue the cmd dd if=/dev/hdb8/vml.... of=boot.img
i copied the boot.img to c: drive

now i screwed up the entire thing. i cant start up at all.
anyone has a remedy. tks in advance.

Try booting from your Linux Rescue CD and
rerun LILO from the CD. It should detect
Windows ME as well as your existing Linux,
and will setup the original boot configuration.

P.S. Just wanted to see if that kind of post
would work.

Assuming you have a winME bootdisk, boot up to the a:\ then type FDISK /MBR then reboot, should fix it up and make winME boot, maybe someone esle can help you getting lilo going from there.

robbo - tried yr method earlier but it still can't detect my hda. tks anyway.

FYI: lilo saves the old boot record in case
of a fowl up. Nice thing about Suse is the CD
will let you boot an existing system. If you
have a backup disk you will also be able to
get in. The option is lilo -u. I also have
(on one machine lilo on a floppy disk).From
the man page. You may have tampered with the
system a bit to much at this point I do not
know if it uses lilo.conf( you may be able to
give it the device on the command line .i.e
/dev/hda).


-u device-name
Uninstall lilo, by copying the saved
boot sector back. A time-stamp is checked.
