I was wondering if someone could tell me the maximum file name length for Linux/Unix. I'm not very familar with Linux yet and I did find the answer anywhere. Also, what's the maximum length for the stuff after the '.'? Like .tar or something. I'm going to put some files on my system that have really long names so it'd be really helpful to know. I also need to know it for something else. I'm running Mandrake 9.2 if that has anything to do with it. The free home edition. Thanks!

255 characters on most filesystems. I think this is a POSIX standard.
