If you're in X and want to stop it, bring up the terminal window and type:
init 3
To start X from the command line, type either:
startx or init 5

Another way is to edit the '/etc/inittab' configuration file and change '5' to '3' in the line that says 'id:5:initdefault:'. This will force the system to alway boot into command line mode. You can then start X with the 'startx &' command from the prompt after logging in. This will run X in the background on console F7 and return the prompt on your original console (F1) while switching to the X screen.
X can then be closed down by pressing
