My Mandrake Linux 8.2 won't detect modem. i have Motorola SM56 internal PCI modem at com4 under DOS. please help me.

frankly speaking it has good reason not to detect it... The thing is that your modem is what is called a "winmodem", that is it uses the system cpu and software to do the work, and that software is made by motorola only for the windows OS... In other words, these modems are a poor design. Get a "real" modem ("most" internals are winmodems, "most" externals are real ones, not all though...) Real modems don't need any software (or driver) to work, the drivers included with windows for these modems are infact just a set of "commands" to pass to the modem for initialisation and dialing. These things are done using scripts or dialing tools in unix type operating systems...
