Hi,

I installed mandrake 9.2 and can't get the internet working. I have an asus a7n8x with the nvidia nForce 2 chipset. eth0 fails during boot. I'm really a newb. I found some other installation notes about the nvidia platform drivers but when I do a make on the files, I get tons of errors. And I couldn't install the kernel source because I don't know how.

I'm wondering either how to install the kernel source for complete newbs or how to get the internet working under the nForce 2 chipset altogether. Thanks

nvidea n(g?)force 2 probably refers to your graphic card. The failure of eth0 could refer
to the ethernetcard not receiving an ip adress dynamically, but to be sure you would have to post the exact message.

Does the mandrake control center have something like netdrake or so for configuring ethernet devices?

How are you connected to the internet? A broadband ethernet modem I assume? Do you know the ip adress the manufacturer of the modem gave you (could be listed in the manual).

Sorry, it could be the ethernetcards indeed are not standard supported under linux. I didn't yet do some research for the cards mentioned.
Maybe best if you post the error messages you receive during startup. (/var/log/messages)

For Your Information, if you want internet to work as quick as possible without any hassle and the problems are hardware related; most pci ethernetcards use the realtek 8139 chipset, which is supported under linux and those cards can be bought for about 10U$.

But buying other hardware is not the nicest solution.

Your ethernetcards are not supported under GPL'ed code due to nvidia's policy.

Best to buy a cheap pci card if you want a system operating under 100% GPL'ed code. And forget about the two onboard ethernetcards.

HI, i have got the same MoBo as you have, and Mandrake 9.2, but mine was detected at install and worked out of the box. Can't help you much, but appearantly, there's no need to compile the kernel, the module should be included at install.

Good luck,

Leon.
