hello, youve all been a big help in the past and hopefully this one shouldnt be to big a tuffy. :)

I recently changed the screen resolution in the kde gui to 800 X 600. Afterwards it told me to logoff so i did just that

Upon logging back on i heard the gui start up but nothing was visible on the screen. Even the button that controls the contrast/brightness built into the moitor wasnt responding. I was however, able to get into the commmand promt, is there any way i can set my display back to 1024 X 768? or
1280 X 1024?

Please..any help is grately appreciated.
Mandrake 9.2 is a great OS and id love to continue enjoying it.

open /etc/X11/XF86Config using an editor and go to the "resolution" section. Then it back to whatever you want to...
There might be come GUI config program for editing the file in mandrake, but I don't know, I have never used mandrake.
If you know how to use "vim" or "vi" then simply editing XF86Config would surely solve your problem. Good Luck.

Animeation...it is HIGHLY advisible to always have any distro boot to the text prompt first(you can usually type <startx> for the X win app)...just in case of video issues such as this you can edit your resolution or whatever using the text editor. Nothing is worse than booting up to a blank screen and not being able to change it; )

The frontend on Mandrake for adjusting the GUI is XFDrake.

You can boot into text mode even when usually set to boot into a GUI by passing "linux 3" to lilo/grub on boot.

Ain't confusing at all. In the end /etc/X11/XF86Config gets edited. You do it by hand, use the installer to do it, or use XFdrake to do it thats up to you.

That's one of the things I like about GNU/linux (note the name due to a previous thread!=o) ...there are several ways to accomplish the same result and it's down to personal choice as to how you do it.

I'm having a similar problem.

I'm running a fresh install (new hard drive)of Mandrake 9.2. I chose to boot to text (thank goodness). When I type STARTX, the screen goes blank, and nothing happens.

I can ALT-F1 back to text mode (yes, I'm trying to run it from the main shell), and the system says it couldn't connect to the XServer.

Any thoughts?

Paste up the last several lines from the output when it says it can't connect to the X server....

Have you tried running XFdrake again? Is you hardware listed (eg make and model of monitor and graphics card)?

I am having a similar problem when trying to run X with mandrake 9.2...

My monitor (NEC MultiSync HR17) and video card (Savage S4) are both listed under XFdrake...

I am attempting to run X under an 800x600 16bpp configureation...but when X attempts to load I simply get a blue screen with a black "x cursor" on it...on top of that to get out of X I am having to reboot my machine...

any suggestions on how to fix this? BTW I am attempting to run a Gnome GUI
