I've downloaded the first two isos for Linux Mandrake 9.0 When I reboot with the first cd, I get the first graphical screen that says "Press Enter to Install" or "F1 for more options." After hitting enter, the screen goes black. I tried a few more times, but could not get graphical install. So I went to the command prompt and typed "text" for the text-based install. I did that and installed all my packages and set my two users: Root and Tcbglitch.

When the computer rebooted, after installation was done, I got the menu to select "linux -entprise, linux, failsafe, nt, or floppy." I tried the two linux ones and I just got a black screen. So I went to failsafe and entered the command prompt. I downloaded the two rpms: kernel and glx, for my graphics card: PNY Technologies Nvidia Geforce4 Ti4600, but here's the next strange thing: I can't login as root.

When going through setup, I used a password and wrote it down, but it would not accept the password. I went through install again and made another simple password for root. Typed it in exactly as I did in install when I got to the login prompt, and it keeps saying authentication failed. But I can log in as Tcbglitch.

I know that was a long explaination. My two questions are: 1. Is there any way to get the graphical installation to work? 2. If not, how come I cannot login as root? (Even when I know I'm typing in the right password)
Here's some system specs:
Optiquest Q95 Monitor
AMD Athlon XP2000+
PNY Technologies Nvidia Geforce4 Ti4600
Maxtor 6L080L4 Hard Drive
ASUS Motherboard

Thanks for any help.

I had no problems on install, I am however having problems with my root. If I'm in KDE and trying to change some settings as a user, of course it asks for roots password. I type it in, and authentication failed. WTF? very annoying. Along with printer problems, but that is another can of stewed worms I won't open up here.

put ur login name as: root
and type your root password.

you can't change system setting (some) if not log in as root.

I finally got Mandrake 9.0 to install correctly and have X Windows setup. However, I am still having problems with my root account. If I'm in X Windows and it asks for the root password and I type it in, it accepts it. If I am using the console, and type my root password in there, I get "authentication failed." What's the deal? I can use root in X windows but not within the console.
