Hey everyone,

I hope someone can answer.

I just finished installing Mandrake Linux 9.0 on my new computer. I am completely new to linux, and im jut fed up with Bill Gates and CO. Anywho, I partitioned a new drive with a ext2 format (using PM Magic 8). I went through all the installation support files and eventually got the installation finished just using the recommended installation. Now when I start up my computer and select Linux from the boot menu, I just get a blank screen. Nothing happens. No HD activity or anything. I've also tried "fail safe" or whatever its called. With fail safe it seems to load some drivers or hardware or something then it goes to a finaly line that says "apm: Bios Version 1.2 flags 0x0b driver ver 1.16". What is wrong with this thing? I've tried installing it in different ways and I keep getting nothing. I selected the GNOME kernal or whatever. I seen something in the installation support on mandrakes website about automatically booting in a GUI or something? But I selected recommended for the installation. What's going on here?

um. No offense. But what the hell are you talking about? That's exactly what I did. I partitioned a 13 gb ext2. and then I installed mandrake on that partition. Also, I dont even get a login screen. I told you I only get a blank screen. A blank screen means there's absolutly nothing on the screen. Which, in turn, defines a Blank Screen. Wow you absolutly did not even come close to solving my problem. I appreciate the attempt, but it just seems like your telling me im stupid.

Um I installed it from a seperate fat32 patition. I got the instructions / boot disk to do this from the actual ISO. So im not using a CD, so its cant be the CD... Cause im not using one. Anywho, the installation is fine though. There's no errors in the installation at all. Mandrake just goes blank...

During mandrake install you may wanna try to turn your ext2 to a reifser or ext3... or make sure that right after you choose wich partition is your "/" and wich is your swap let it format those two.

Does it tell you something at the LILO installation step? and did you make the boot floppy disk when it was suggested?

Is there a way you can burn the ISO files and launch install from CD instead of mounting the ISO files? Maybe that would be the easiest way to solve this...

Well I guess I could try making it a ext3. And, I dont have a swap. I was told I didnt need one, that it was onl for performance and such. What do you mean LILo Installation? Im not sure what you mean by Lilo (remember im completely new to this). And no I cant burn it. The ISOs are too big for my CDs. If I cant install linux tonight, I think i might just give up and give into bill gates. At least he knows how to make help files lol.

I also installed MD9.0 from iso. Works fine.

First, did you check the md5sum #'s on the iso's?
If not that is your first step. If they don't match must re-download.

Try -turnning off apm/acpi in your BIOS
-turn off Plug N Play OS if it's in BIOS

How are you trying to boot into Linux -from HD, FD? Did you make the boot (rescue) floppy during the install like it suggested?

-Try booting from that floppy instead of HD. (assuming you weren't)

That's all I can think of for now, let us know what happens.

Whatever you do, don't give up on Linux. I'm a beginner myself and I strugled a lot (especially when it came to hardware compatibility). If you still can't make Mandrake 9.0 work, I'd recommend you try a different distro. I had a great experience with SuSe 8.0 Professional. You can pick one up over the net for a few bucks from ebay (the auction). It's brilliant. I'm sure MD 9.0 is just as good, but unless you are 100 % sure the disks are all o.k. and/or more good advice is given to you, I'd give it a rest and try something else. I wish I could be of more help.

Ok well. I used www.linuxiso.org to DL the ISO's. I partitioned a fat32 and stuck all the CD into one directory. I did turn off the plug & os. But I dont know what apm is. I do get an apm driver though when it freezes in fail safe. But it seems that I still get a blank screen. Maybe i missed something in the install.... I did make the floppy disk like suggested. So ive tried to boot off the HD and the FD. And I still get a blank screen. Boy this is frustrating.

your problem is dat linux bootmanager uses diskspace in the first sector and if there is a other OS installed ... bad luck.
this is how you have to install it.
(that's how i did it)
make your harddisk empty , no partitions.
then install windows os (my pc it was XP PRO) and only use a piece of the harddisk (40gb =20GB WXPPRO & 20GB Linux mandrake 9.0)
install xp when finished.
i installed linux from the network by making a network installation disk (ftp)
i installed linux and they both work fine together.

Ryan,
I had a similar senerio when I tried to install SuSe. it turn out that x windows could not load drivers for my video card. I froze everytime. I change the video card and the problem went away. I have also recently intall md9.0, it went very smooth, but I installed from the CDs all the way.

good luck.

Hey Ryan, Let's not give up! I am getting the blank screen (right after a text login flashes across) then nothing. Installing (my very first Linux install) RedHat 7.3. I let the installer choose my partitions, have a swap, installed all the software they offered me.
I am going to bed and leave the thing on. I have seen miracles worked this way before. How long did you wait till you tried to reboot?

:-)
