Hi. I'm new to Linux. Actually, I bought a used computer that the HDD was already partitioned for Win2000 and Mandrake 8.2. But I'm having trouble even get to Linux and I need some serious help there!!
When I selected to boot with Linux, it brought up a screen that asked if I want interactive mode. I ignored and let it boot. Then it always halted when it was trying to find "eth0". Then eventually it failed and moved on. Then it brought me to a login screen (kind of looked like DOS, nothing facny. PLain text). But I could never get to this window-manager that I can do click and choose. I can only go as far as the log in screen. What can I do in order to go there? The pseron who sold the computer to me went to that page when he tested the computer. I've been trying to ask him but he never replied that's why I came here for hlep. Thanks!

If you can actually login, then once you get a prompt, type: startx
Hopefully this other person has the system configured correctly.

if startx works, check /etc/inittab you should see a line that looks like id:5:initdefault: - if is similar, but has id:3, you need to change this to 5
