The CD-ROM on my laptop was fried, and it was cheaper to buy a USB CD-RW than to get a replacement from Compaq. The vendor advertised this drive as "Linux compatible", but the Linux system (at least the Mandrake 8.2 USB boot disk) will not. However, there is an option to choose the specific driver (usbstorage.o is the one I need, from what I understand) yet this does not work, though there is an option to pass the kernel certain options. I assume this is what I will have to do, but I have little knowledge of the Linux system, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be very greatful. Thank you.
