I successfully installed Mandrake 8.0 with GNOME on a dual boot with Windows ME, autologging onto the single user I setup and loading X. I had entered the wrong port for my modem and after checking it in Windows I went back to Linux to try and change it (I
had guessed COM 4 in the setup, it's in fact COM 3).
I was trying to find where to change this...I opened the display expecting to get info about my video card, instead I got a drop down menu of cards...I have GeForce2 Go and thinking somehthing wasn't setup I selected the nearest - GeForceGo2 (ddr) - from the list. Now when it boots up it goes through loading and then instead of going to GNOME it goes into some weird screen colours - my only option (I think) at this point is to reboot.
Can you suggest how to get GNOME back (I am a complete UNIX rookie) and then where I can update my modem port.
Thanks so much for helping me along.
Cheers, Tom.

Try setting up your card again.
I could tell you to check the X11 logs, but that would mean nothing to you.
After you successfully log into mandrake, type Xconfigurator at the command prompt, then follow the instructions. If the screen seems to hang for a long time after starting X, press ctrl-alt-backspace. (This key combination shuts down Xwindows)
I would have to see you X11 output log to give you more insight.
I know in mandrake 8.1, when Xwindows is up and running, you can see text output of the status by pressing ctrl-alt-F12. It may be the same in Mandrake 8.0.
thats about all I can offer.
Mike
