Try: (# is shell prompt)
#init 5
if that works you probably selected no graphic login and are set to boot to run level 3.

Does "startx" work? If not you will need to reconfigure X, you can do this in mandrake with XFdrake.

I just installed Mandrake 10.1 - dual-booted with Win 98 - and had the same problem. Then I went back thru the installation process and realized that I had bypassed the installation of my Nvidia graphics card. After that, the GUI was fine.
