I just downloaded the Redhat linix 9 cds from the redhat site. When I extracted and burn the files on a cd they do not boot up when I restart my computer. Can someone tell me how to make the cd's bootable so that I can install Linux? Thanks

you need to burn them with software which recognises iso images and can burn them as an "image" not as a file.

When you open the cd from windows explorer, you should see lots of folders and files and not the iso image itself.
I think "nero" can burn it properly (I don't use windows and don't know much about windows software)

Hi,

I have used Nero to burn Linux .iso files before and it is very easy...

if you have a newer version of Nero.

Let me ask you, do you get a wizard when you open up Nero?

Here's what I do with my Nero:

Nero opens up, the wizard opens and asks me what kind of disk I want to make, I pick "other", since the visible ones are "data file" "audio cd", etc... but no "image"

so when you get to the "other" menu, you pick "iso image" and there is a picture of a cd looking in the mirror at itself. pick that, then browse to where your .iso file is.

Bottom line, if your Nero doesn't have the wizard, you might wanna get a newer Nero to make your life a lot easier.

You might be able to get a free copy of a newer Nero here:

I do have nero and I do get a wizard when I start it off. I chose ISO but the problem is that NERO is looling for an actual .img file and the filese that I downloaded from redhat do not contain the actual .img or .bin file. When You extrac the cd's a whole bunch of files and directores show up. I tried to burn them as a data cd but it won't work. And like I said when I chose ISO from the wizard NERo looks for an .img file and won't let me select all the files that I extracted.

Hi again,

Hmmm.. I don't know what to tell you. The thing is, almost everyone would agree that Nero is by far the best at burning .iso files. I'm sorry that my previous post didn't help you.

I don't know how to unlock this mystery. All you need are the .iso files, each is one CD. I don't know what you mean by the whole extract thing. You shouldn't do anything at all with the .iso files. Just leave them alone!

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but it is all I can think of. When Nero opens a browser, after you pick "iso image", can you pick "all files" in the browser, instead of the default ".img" only, don't worry. Nero will burn the .iso file correctly!

Thats all I can think of. I'm certain that you don't have to do anything to the .iso files. Leave them as they are.

Good Luck,
Samer

you need to redownload your distribution. you need to make sure that you are downloading the iso's and not the files themselves. there should be a directory something like this: ftp.server.com/redhat/i386/images/9.0

I do not agree about Nero being almost the best program to burn ISO-images. To burn or create images, I use Alcohol 120%. It has much more options, and a much better virtual cd-rom-drive.
try using this program.
When I was still using Nero to burn images, I did the folowing:
close the wizard, go the the 'file'-menu and choose 'Burn Image'. It will be looking for .img-files, but you can fill in an the filename for the iso-image too. then hit 'burn' and that's all there is!
