Greetings, all!
I so much want to make my permanent switch from Microsucks Windows ;-) to Linux, but I keep getting problems. I am totally new, have a limited amount of time to do full research, etc...
Can you guys pls help me out?
I've been "using" linux for abt a month now, and have had to install it about 6 times already! and it is getting a bit frustrating.
I have RHL7.2. I custom installed. I'm afraid to shut down after using it because something always happens (or does not happen).
I have four user accounts; i logged on as a regular user and when logging off, forgot to save settings. When i try to log back on, the screen goes blank, and back to the login menu. I can log in as all the other users, though. Pls help!
I have an Intellimouse ps/2 mouse that can scroll on a window with the middle button. How can I enable that middle button?
I have a HP deskjet 970cxi printer. How can I install it?
I have a dvd and cdrw. How can i install/use them?
I have lots more q's, but don't want to frustrate you guys with them.
At any rate, thanks for all and any help you guys can offer.

Whoa!

I'll try to answer as many q's of u'rs as i can.

I don't really understand the user thing and why it doesn't allow u to logon with that user. There are many things that could be screwed up here, but the easiest fix is to just delete the user and recreate that login since this is a new install.

I dont think that problem will keep cropping up. If it does, then u're in for some time into debugging.

Also, exactly what distro have u installed on u're machine? The easiest ones to install are probably Mandrake, RedHat or Suse. If u're time is limited and u are new to linux then one of these is what u should be considering.

As for the mouse wheel, I remember seeing some document on how to do that somewhere. I'll post its url when i find it.

U're printer is supported by linux. Here're the links to download the driver and installation instructions:

http://www.harsch.net/Ghostscript/ghostscript.html

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=cdj970

As for the DVD, any later distro of linux should have UDF support compiled into the kernel, so all u have to do is get ureself the binaries for the 'ogle' player or 'xine' or 'mplayer' and u're all set. Do a search on google for these names one by one and install whichever u like. Ogle's the easiest for just DVD's but the other two handle almost all other formats.

Basically u're DVD drive will work as any other cdrom drive but will also play DVD's

As for the cdrw, there are already many burner programs and some of them come with the newer distros. u can try either 'xcdroast' or 'gcombust'.

One thing about cdrw drives however.. is that u have to use the ide-scsi driver for it to burn cd's. This document says exactly how to do it:

Good Luck
