lost linux password

Hi, I took over this linux server and I have to make changes but I don't know the password and it boots straight to the login/password prompt and I can't find anything on the web to fix this prob. Please Help

Get a Linux boot disk for your particular distro -- may be available at http://www.bootdisk.com
Boot from the floppy and type linux single at the prompt. That should get you to root.
Now I have a question: was the previous server admin fired or did he die suddenly?
I have all necessary docs and passwords in a hidden safe in my server room, and our CEO has the combo--so that if something ever did happen to me they won't be stuck.

Thanks for response. It was a company that looked after their firewall and they went bankrupt. ( would not give passwords so as they were the only ones to service this client)
