hi

What is the importance of localdomain domain?
Even if created a new domain called ROCKET during red hat installation setup, when I opened Hosts file there was this entry:

127.0.0.1 mars.ROCKET mars localhost.localdomain localhost

So why does this entry record include two domain names? There must be some reason for having localdomain domain.

thank you

There are programs that require the localhost/domain loopback connection in order to work. Leave it in there otherwise you may break things.

hi

You mean they require a domain by that exact name?
So 127.0.0.1 has in the above case two domains...ROCKET and localdomain?

thank you for your help

one is the real domain name the other is an alias so the system can find it

hi
I assume ROCKET is an alias? But what if I make an entry

HOSTNAME=mars.ROCKET

in /etc/sysconfig/Network file?Is it still considered just alias?

I still don't quite understand why there are two files(Hosts and Network)for entering domain names. How are they different?

thank you

I would have thougght a more sensible /etc/hosts file would have been along the lines of:

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.0.1 mars mars.rocket

What is the difference between this entry and one I have?

Not really too much difference, just that if you reference your PC with the name mars it will resolve it to your loopback device instead of your network card (eth0). Depends on your network, but if everything is working OK there is no need to change.
