OS: WinXP/RH Lin. 9.2
CPU/Ram: 1.5ghz / 512
Comment:

I was bored one night, so I went & downloaded Red Hat Linux 9.2(?) or whatever the latest version was just to mess around with & see what it was like.
Ok, so I'm better off with WinXP for what I want to do (play games ;)
Anyway, it boots up & I have to choose WinXP from the list.
It defaults to Linux(with the linux background, not the black Windows one)

I can't change it from Windows. I know next to nothing about Linux, but I assume I have to change this from within Linux?

Here is my drive layout..

C:/D: = Windows (40gb)
E:/F: = CD/CDRW drives
G: = Linux (20gb)

Anyone know how? I guess I could just format the G: drive :) but I'd like to keep it just in case I need it for something.

If you installed lilo (versus grub), then modify the file /etc/lilo.conf and change "default=linux" to "default=winxp" or whatever the "label" is that represents the boot of Windows XP. Then, save the file, and at a command prompt (terminal), enter "lilo". It should then echo back the label names with the default having an asterisk beside it. Reboot.

Good luck.

Take a look at the file /etc/grub.conf when in Linux

The line "default=0" means load the top option if nobody selects otherwise. I am assuming that DOS is the second option, hence the change you need to make is "default=1"

Incidently, the problem you will still have once you've changed grub is that the bootloader is residing on your g: drive. Hence, if you format that drive you'll be unable to boot at all...

To restore your original boot sector (and just boot into XP without asking) you need to use your Windows XP installation CD, and there is an option on there... if that's what you want to do it is probably best to ask on the Windows forum rather than here.

Surprised you hate RH9 so much... I adore it.

Ok, I'm on Linux now. How do I open this file? lol :)
If I were in Windows, I'd use Notepad. I assume there's a similar program for Linux.

Keep in mind, I've not familiar with Linux hehe

I see grub.conf & lilo.conf.anaconda.

Anaconda sounds familiar from when installing.

Ok, I logged in as root & edited grub.conf. I changed the order they were listed & it worked. :) Now it shows Windows as first choice & is highlighted.
Thanks!

Btw, I never said I hated it! ;) I'm just not used to it & I play games that probably aren't supported on Linux.
