Sorry I can't actually help, but I do know that there aren't drivers yet for a lot of ESS sound cards. Try looking at lhd.zdnet.com (the Linux Hardware Database) to see if yours is compatible. You'll need to know the vendor ID and model number, which for PCI cards can be found by typing "cat /proc/pci", though I am not sure about Plug and Play cards.
