Is thier a nice distro of Linux that I can run on a 233MHZ/ 32 or 64MB(I think it is one of these) laptop with X? I just want to run Linux and X to do simple stuff like run OpenOffice and maybe browse the Internet once I get an Internet connection and configure the modem.

Adam -

Good luck running OpenOffice with 64 meg or less (If it IS 32 meg you have, there's basically no way it's going to happen) and 64 meg will require LOTS of swapping to disk. I just loaded OpenOffice's word processor and it took about 64 meg all by itself (thank goodness I have 512 meg of RAM). By the way, also give up on KDE or Gnome with 64 Meg or less (that which is packaged with modern distros, that is). Is this 233 a Pentium II or a Pentium? If it's a Pentium II (and you plan to use this laptop), then get some more memory for it, however with a Pentium and more than 64 Meg of RAM running with certain chipsets, it will actually slow you down (stay at 64 meg or go to 64 meg if it's a Pentium, to be on the safe side).

Look for a slimmed-down distro (beama's suggestion being a good place to look), along with equivalent office productivity packages and browsers (sorry, but I think OpenOffice is out of the question without an upgrade). Also, as beama has suggested (I take it), you may run into problems connecting to the internet, if by dial-up. Consider an external serial modem, as it's the best for this (been using them for years).

English not your first language, beama?

Good luck to you both.

Sure. That's what I meant by "Look for a slimmed-down distro (beama's suggestion being a good place to look), along with equivalent office productivity packages and browsers".

You might be able to use Opera or Firefox, as far as browsers are concerned.

What I might suggest is running an older distro, such as Redhat 6 (2.2 kernel), along with Netscape 3 (turn off javascript) or 4. That would run nicely on a 233 Mhz with 64 Meg of RAM.

To run a newer distro (practically speaking), I'm sorry, but I can't recommend anything less than 500 Mhz and 128 meg of RAM. Otherwise, I believe you will be disappointed with the performance.

Good luck.
