What do you want the pc to do?
What do you want to do on the pc?
How much money and/or time do you want to invest?Answer those questions first and then you won't have to ask which os to use.
Mac = most expencive pc on the planet, (you can only run the os on a pc from apple which makes it very stable).Windows = the most popular os on the planet, (runs on almost any hardware, but is prone to crash if run on cheap or iffy hardware, or not configured right).
Linux = free and very stable, (but does not run on all the hardware that windows does, has steep learning curve for people with only windows experience.)

"runs on almost any hardware"
Nope, that's either Linux or NetBSD. If what you mean is support for obscure PC hardware like a giant USB-connected button designed for little kids, then yes, Windows wins, but Windows doesn't run on Macs, Alphas (ok, so NT 4.0 does, but it's really old), Sparcs, top 10 supercomputers, Dreamcasts, PlayStation 2s, X-Boxes (it's Windows-based, but you can't use it as a PC like with Linux), etc.
I have a printer, scanner, and TI graph link all working in Linux. I haven't tried webcams, digital cameras, video capture cards, etc., but I hear the support is good.

Here ya go, pretty decent comparison

Yes Jake, I know that there are those out there that can make linux run on the space shuttle and everything in between.
But for the rest of the world, when I said most hardware I was referring to what normal people consider hardware, the stuff we buy off the shelf that says "compatibile with,,,,,"
And not all of it is great big usb buttons made for us kiddies.

PS. NT 4.0 is not that old, was only 4 years ago it was the top banana at MS. But I guess if you've only been using a pc for 4 years that might seem old to you.
lol
:-P

It was just over 8 years ago since NT4 was released...but then again even longer for linux. It's more a case of how the OS "matures" and is developed. Look how many releases of the linux kernel there have been compared to service pack releases for NT. Maybe if microsoft had concentrated on just one version of windoze instead of trying to produce lots of different "distros"(!?!) ie 98, NT, 2K etc, things might have been a lot different.
