it's very hard to know the needing packages,
because there's a lot (as you said)

i recommend to download a distribution-cd
(or cd-set) in format iso, and after that
burn it on a cd-r
that way you can install a linux system
easily(it might be not so easy for the first
time, it's true :)

visit http://www.linuxiso.org to get the CDs

SuSE Linux is not distributed in ISO form. The only ISO form that is downloadable from SuSE is the evaluation CD.

The evaluation CD is pretty cool though. The entire system is setup and ran from the CD. You need only some temporary swap space on your hard drive. The downside, of course, is that this is only an evaluation. In order to get the full blown everything, you need to purchase it.

But, you get like seven CD's of software and a DVD with the software on it if you do purchase it. That's in addition to the very good manuals. I run SuSE 7.1 Pro. I got it when it was on sale for $50. Seven CD's (more than 2000 programs) for $50!

If your looking for something that you don't want to pay for, try Redhat Linux. Version 7.2 just came out. www.redhat.com

Yes. You can download any version of Linux.
They are free to download.
here are some of the places you can go.
FIRST! Go to tucows.com and find the freeware program called FILEZILLA.
It is used to go and download software at ftp sites.
Here are some places you can go to and get linux. But I hope you have the time and space. on the computer. And I hope you have cable modem or dsl. because a 56k modem will take you a month or more to download it.

Go to
ftp.redhat.com
enter the pub area
then enter redhat
then linux
and select current
after that go into folder en
Then select all of the folders
doc-iso-os folders.
you will open first filezilla
and look at the top left corner that says address. enter ftp.redhat.com
And press the Enter Key.
you will select you information on the REMOTE SIDE OF THE SCREEN....
SELECT THE FOLDERS AND DRAG AND DROP IN THE
LOCAL FOLDERS AREA OR BETTER YET. HIGH LIGHT ALL THE ICONS TO DOWNLOAD AND RIGHT CLICK ON THE MOUSE AND CHOOSE THE DOWNLOAD.
SOME TIMES YOU MAY HAVE TO GOBACK AFTER ALL THE DOWNLOADING IS FINNISHED TO SEE IF ANY FOLDERS ARE MISSING. IF SO MAKE THEM YOUR SELF IN THE AREA AT LEFT CALLED FILE NAME UNDER THE LOCAL SITE.
BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD ANY INFORMATION/FILES
GO TO TOP OF SCREEN AND CLICK ON TRANSFER
AND SELECT THE FILE OVERWRITE SETTINGS AND CHOOSE THE OVERWRITE IF NEWER.

MORE SITES ARE
ftp.suse.com
ftp.mandrake.com
ftp.redhat.com
and to find other linux os systems
go to linux.com
tucows.com linuxdrivers.com
well I hope this helped you out some.
