Wow...Look at you. You must be proud of yourself. You are just another sell-out Bill Gate's little b**ch.

Because you are dumb doesn't mean you need to get all bittered about Linux.

Why bother then? get Windows and get on with your life but don't mess with Linux in this forum.

PS: By the way, I know what's on your hard drive.

What an interesting post. Although I disagree with what you say, I'm not going to go "Microsoft Bashing" like a lot of Linux geeks tend to do. Instead, I'm going to take what you said and show why it's not correct.

You said that Bill [Gates] should "keep up the good work and trash [Linux]". However, if you would have known something about Linux or the GPL, you would have known that Gates, or any other person cannot really do anything about Linux. Think about it...

He can't buy Linux.
The OS is free and protected by the GPL.

He can't compete with Linux.
What is there to compete against? It's free.

He can't stop Linux.
Linux users are not easily intimidated.

On a side note, Microsoft _has_ actually started a campaign against UNIX with a website called "We Have the Way Out" (http://www.wehavethewayout.com/), only to be met by the UNIX/Linux community with "We Have the Way In" (http://www.wehavethewayin.com/). Ironicly, the original server that hosted WHtWO was running a UNIX variant. It was later switched after it was discovered. Even more ironicly, Microsoft once developed a UNIX OS called Xenix. They later sold it early in development.

Anyway, that's my daily rant.

It should also be noted that Microsoft IS developing *NIX applications. IE and MS Office for MacOsX is proof of this.

I'm sure with a little compiling they'd work with other *NIX variants. Just a thought.

Actually, IE is already availible for UNIX from Microsoft.

http://www.microsoft.com/unix/ie/default.asp

Microsoft also offers an MS/UNIX cross-platform service.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/

So what does this all mean? Is MS bending to the will of the UNIX community? Probably not. It's more likely that they are trying to get a foothold in the non-GPL (commercial) software bussiness for UNIX/Linux.

Right now I'm wondering who in the right mind would actaully run IE in Linux.

That says it all. YOU KNOW WHAT? All those Linux idiots all wrong. Why do we bother with Linux? WE CAN'T EVEN PLAY SOLITAIRE ON IT! oh wait yeah we can BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT!
Marco's RIGHT! We're all wrong to use Linux! All those servers are powered by idiots! Millions of people are obviously wrong to use it!
Uhhh....Linux sucks! Yeah! That's it! It's a sh!tty OS! It's not good for anything! All those people who program for it - they're just idiots. Why did they bother doing The Matrix on Linux clusters anyway? What about Monsters Inc.? They're idiots too. Why didn't they just use Windows? It's obviously so much better for everything. What is RedHat inc. thinking anyway?

I mean, why did Linus even bother? He's such an idiot. What the fork are those people like RedHat and the Free Software Foundation and all the Open Source folks thinking? It all just sucks. All the people who have anything to do with it are just idiots.
And the many companies suing M$, well they just don't know what they're talking about. The same with the numerous states involved in that antitrust case - they just have no clue what they're doing. And all the lawyers and blah like that - they're wrong. There's no monopoly being abused, or anything like that.

Linux isn't faster. Who ever came up with that? Or more secure. That's just a load of bullwash.

God, I can't even run all my Windows apps on it! What kind of crap is that? And it doesn't support my sh!tty USB WinModem! Besides, I had no clue what I was doing and I f**ked up my entire computer!

GOD HOW DUMB ARE SOME OF YOU PEOPLE?!?!?!?!

If you have the money for Windows (or you want to break the law), don't care about security or stability, and don't want control over your system, then go ahead and use Windows.

Also rember that you will need to pay extra for all your other software. Add up the cost of Windows server edition (not pro, server), Office XP, Photoshop, MS Visual C++, and whatever else you might need.

Most Linux distributions are more than an OS. They often come with servers for HTTP, FTP, SSH, Telnet, NFS, Samba, etc., development tools for C, C++, Fortran, ASM, etc., multiple desktop environments, image editing software, and more.

Also, about IE on Linux. People might want it so they can quickly verify that their web pages work in IE.

If you are too lazy and stupid to learn how to use a computer and OS, just buy a MAC and stay out of this forum.

Linux's goal was not to have kids playing solitaire... but to become the standard of internetworking. If most ISP use Linux/Unix in their architecture, it's probably not so bad...

Linux has evolved from the original goal, to include the desktop. Mandrake and Suse are really good on the desktop. I use Mandrake Linux 8.1 Powerpack Edition (purchased) and am waiting for 8.2 powerpack (will arrive in a few days) as part of the Powerpack subscription I purchased.

If you want to run NON directx apps in linux, there is Win4Lin. For games, there is WineX, but you need an Nvidia card.

I dual boot with win98se, and I like both OSes. If I can migrate my non directx apps to linux via Win4Lin, I will spend my non gaming time in linux, and use win98se for windows games. I am seriously considering purchasing Borland Kylix 2 Professional and learning to program in Object Pascal (can't afford Borland Delphi 6 Pro: waaaay too expensive at $1,000).

Yes, I know about Kylix 2 open edition, but, there are features that are only available in the pro edition.

Guys and gals: to keep linux going and improving, support your favorite distro by purchasing a package, even if it is only a standard/personal one.

Charles

What Mr "Check Out My Controversial Posting" Marco fails to realise is that LINUX offers us something far more globally significant than a mere alternative:

We are offered a "choice"

Which is far more than the "cashists" would ever allow us if they had their own way.

It's not about being anti-Microsoft it's about allowing peple to make their own choices.
Linux is a symbol of freedom and freewill.

We are entitled to our opinions and we must make sure we remain entitled to our choices as well.
Thats my tuppence worth on the matter anyhow.

about windows vs. linux...
ongoing development.

do you know about xp? m$'s new line of xp software is evil. read the EULA. do you know what the x-box is? it's a trick. microsoft cares about games? right... it's a computer with a paddle, everyone knows that. now guess what? if a software developer for pc games wants a name? think about it. it's mainstream, pop culture. it's a name in your head.

http://www.arachnoid.com/boycott/index.html

^ to learn about what "xp" is, and what it will become.

http://www.geocities.com/netmaniac00/hatems.html

^to learn why/how ms is using you.

http://slashdot.org/articles/01/07/05/1526255.shtml

^click the links here to see what others, including IBM, think about ms.

do you really dare to think that only idiots and little people hate ms?

open your eyes. read. learn. stop watching ms-nbc all the time and learn why it's called ms-nbc. even the people at microsoft know that your an idoit if you buy their stuff. so do the tobacco companies. dont belive me? read whats on BOTH of the packages they sell you. both have warnings. you dont think they know what they're doing? ms has trained professionals siting around all day to look for stuff about microsoft! but xp may eliminate the need for that. the only reason why xp stuff is NOT ILEAGAL is because you sign an EULA that says you don't mind being f*cked. read it. read it.
you want proof? read the sh*t they have you sign. god, people amaze me. EVEN MIRCOSOFT ITS SELF TELLS YOU HOW THEY ARE f---ING YOU, AND NO ONE BELIVES IT! THEY FAIL TO READ THE FINE PRINT WHEN THEY INSTALL MS SOFTWARE. TRY READING IT ONCE BEFORE YOU CLICK OK. maybe it was a bad idea to give technology to monkeys. computers were never meant to go mainstream anyway. read, people.

I notice in one of post 11 links it says that Netscape invented the Browser.
I do beleive Mosiac was before Netscape and "both" Netscape Navigator and Internet Explore are based on Mosaic. Just look in the credits of both browers.

Netscape popularized the browser. Kind of like what Marconi did for radio, and he gets credit for inventing it, while Tesla actually invented the fundamentals.

As for the current code base, Netscape forked. The latest releases have been based on Mozilla (since 6.0, I think).

Hi Marco.
I supported hs students and hs teachers for
3.5 years at a high school that ran netware
and windows NT servers, and win 9x on the
desktop.

Gradually, due to the unending problems,
with licensing, software glitches, and
security issues we gradually migrated our
service infrastructure to linux, though the
desktops stayed MS. The desktops were then
our only source of problems.

I noticed that the only people upset over
this were licensed providers of netware and
nt services that we had used previous to
linux. These parasitic leeches could not
understand why someone would go with a
"complicated, cli based.." solution. They
thought that having the ability to call
$150 dollar an hour jerkoffs for bad advice
and misconfiguration was some sort of
irreparable loss.

Every once in a while I'll call these guys
to inquire as to whether a team of their
service specialists can come out and repair
the damage the children do to their windows
desktops over the course of a school year;
since working with linux has left me out
of practice in fixing corrupted registries,
viruses and virus software,licensing
software and ms office.
I've never had them take me up on the offer.
I wonder why?
