Linux Starting and Login Problems

I have no experience with Linux. So here are my questions. I installed Linux 7.3 using two disks, by selecting every package on the installation screen from classic x windows system to ftp and all other stuff. However, when it came time for making a boot disk for my system, the comp froze, so I rebooted the wrong way (pressing the main switch). When Linux started it asked me to login in "text" mode which I though would come up in Graphic mode. Anyway, i dont know the root username so, cant login as a root. So I logged in as my other account name and pass. So it too me to a crazy prompt. There I tried typing "startx" or "telinit 5" (which is for root). But none of them worked. For startx it gave me an error, no screen found. I really need to have linux in next 3 weeks. Please help me out. I have Linux on a new hard drive so no question of different os and all that.

"root" is the name of the administrator on linux systems. have you already set up a root password? if you havent try logging in with username: root and no password or if that doesnt work at the boot prompt enter "linux init=/bin/bash" that will kick you right into a root shell. though to be honest, if you have no experience with linux it might be easier just to reinstall and do not make a boot disk this time :)
what distro are u using? linux 7.3 is no correct distro name. (might be red hat linux 7.3 or suse linux 7.3, i dont know exactly if these versions exist for these distributions since i use debian :))
