linux squid error

OS: Linux Red Hat 8.0
CPU/Ram: 333Mhz/192M

Dear All,
I've got a problem with Linux squid setup, Pls anybody can help! I've install my squid in my computer, I use Red Hat 8.0.

I followed the Linux book to setup squid.conf. It prompted following error:
I typed "./etc/rc.d/init.d/squid restart"
Stopping Squid [FAILED]
Starting Squid [FAILED]

also when I typed "squid -k check"
It will prompted "Squid: ERROR: no running copy".

I don't know where did I went wrong, Could you pls help me that.
I'm looking forward to your reply.

Squid generates a logfile in /var/log/messages?

try

./etc/rc.d/init.d/squid status and find out first whether squid is running.
