Comment: I have am constucting a LAN in my house. I have a 10-base hub, a cable modem (External), three computers (two with win98 and one with Linux Mandrake 7.0), and little knowledge of how to get them to work. I want all my computers to use the same cable modem at the same time. In order to do that without buying a new IP address, I would have to setup one computer (the linux machine) as a proxy server (okay, a pentium computer with 32mb of ram isn't much for a server, but hey, it's all I got to work with). Now, I don't have any idea of how to setup a proxy server on Linux (or windows for that matter) and have no idea how to get my windows machines to talk to the other computers. Please help, anyone who can give me a walk through or resource on how to handle this would be very appreciated.

Reply: (edit)Most linux distrs come with a proxy server. Is called squid and Mandrake has it too Install it from the cd if it isn't there. To start it just type: squid OR squid -D if you aren't connected with the net Read the documentation of it and when you are done edit squid.conf file in /etc/squid to tweak it. Samba may be your answer . Anyway for all your questions go to www.linuxdoc.org and look at all the networking howtos

Reply: (edit)You may setup your linux box as a router/gateway, and use IP masquerading with ipchains (firewall). Then setup your windows box to use you linux box as gateway. This setting is only for a LAN which has only one valid IP (not 192.168.x.x or other private IP).

Reply: (edit)screw the linux server and buy a linksys router. It provides its own dhcp or it configures client ip addresses automatically. It also uses the one ip address that your isp provided. It uses nat technology that allows all user with the ability to use that one ip. If you use more than one ip address some isp providers get pissed because your eating up their addresses. The dsl router provides its own firewall because of the nat technology.

Reply: (edit)Screw the LINKSYS router and goto FREESCO.ORG which stands for a "Free cisco" router. It pretty much will handle any of your computing dialup/dialin needs on 1 floppy disk, on a VERY small computer (mine is on a 486, 25mg with 8megs)
