Comment: i'm testing this linux thing now and first i tried redhat 7.0. but i couldn't get the networking to work since my main computer is XP pro. So i got me Red Hat 9.0 while i was trying out things for fun. now i have red hat 9 and it runs so slow but i also have winme on the 1.hd rh9 on the 2. is it normal that it takes 10 minutes to go through the boot. and i just can't seem to get the networking to work .. just need to get on the inter net through the XP. i have read a lot of tuff here bout starting sharing and bla bla... i know that !!! my network is now 5 computers with various windows systems even 3.11. the thing is dns and dhcp and gateway... you see i have a workgroup network not a domain.. so if you can help me plz do it quiclky...

Reply: (edit)No, it's not normal for it to take 10 minutes to boot. My guess is that you're loading things such as sendmail and these daemons are finally timing out. Load "ntsysv" (or "setup", then "System services") from a command prompt (or "redhat-config-services" if you prefer a gui version), and uncheck all unncessary services (daemons). You will probably want to keep keytable, network, random, and syslog checked. When finished, reboot the box. The machine should then be considerably faster, at least getting booted. Plus, you'll be using less physical memory as fewer daemons will be loaded. Therefore, less swapping will need to be done, and therefore effectively the machine will be faster. By the way, I'd recommend putting another 128 Meg of RAM in this computer. Use "redhat-config-network" or "setup" (then Network configuration) for network setup. Good luck.

Reply: (edit)You need to learn what the services do to determine whether or not you need them. There isn't a list somewhere just for your needs, unless you decide to make one. Like I mention above, load "ntsysv" (do this in a console by pressing CTRL-ALT-F2. To get back, enter CTRL-ALT-F7). Press F1 for a description of each daemon (don't do this in a terminal in the gui as F1 may not work) . This will help you determine whether or not you need it. You probably need to add "lpd" since you have a printer, but other than that, you probably only need those I mentioned above. You may not even need "random". It's recommended that you load "keytable" and "syslog". "Network" is necessary for your network. To use internet e-mail and chat, you don't need anything else. Mandrake has an "internet" daemon, but I'm not sure why it's necessary in that distribution.
