After a failed attempt to install Linux, I wiped my drive and performed a clean install of Windows XP. After completing the installation I noticed a drive E in My Computer. I only have 2 physical drives. When tried to access the drive, a message claiming that the drive was not formatted appeared. I attempted to format but was then displayed a message stating that this drive could not be formatted. I believe it is the "raw" partition that Linux installed. How can I get rid of this taughting drive letter?????

If you have 2 physical hard drives, shouldn't E be a CD drive?

when you say "wiped", presumably you had to repartion?
on my version of windoze, drive letters are related to partitions.
could this suggest why you failed to install Linux?

"on my version of windoze, drive letters are related to partitions." That is how it is on every version of windows. I was assuming E would be the cd drive because typically its useless to have more than 1 NTFS partition per drive.

your manufacture of the pc could have their own partition on the drive for diagnostics and such. dell, ibm and compaq do this.
"wipeing" the drive and re-installing xp may have just seen the space and auto assigned a letter to it.
what size is the partition?

The drive has no size. When clicked on in My Computer it does not display any properties. I've also tried to obtain information through using Partition Magic (8.0) and through Windows' Disk Management, yet neither recognize this "phantom" drive.

Might try doing a search for a program called "Delpart" (delpart.exe). Put it on a floppy, boot to it...and wipe out the partition - whether the partition has anything on it or not.

Glad it worked bro!
Delpart = the most under-rated program that still fits on a floppy :-)
