Hello Linux People
Can anybody help me with a networking problem. My Linux system can not detect my network card. I have just installed RH 7.1. and before I was running W98 and it identified the NIC as a 3com 3c509b and it worked perfectly well(so I know it's there) but Linux cannot/will not see it. What should I do?
Thank you for reading this.

dude
easiest way i did this was to install linuxconf rpm from either disk 1 or 2 off the install....
as root # rpm -Uvh linuxconf... (version number)
run linuxconf find the section to add network adapters add the device making sure under kernel module you use ctrl-x to bring a list of network adapters and 3c509b is there....
commit the changes and if you have added it correctly when you run the command ifconfig eth0 or ifconfig -a you should see the adapter listed....

Thanks for the advice, however I ran Linuxconf but there is no option there to add network adapters. Under
what heading is it?

Start Linuxconf by typing linuxconf at the shell prompt
Open Config => Networking => Client tasks => Host names and IP network devices.
see this link, it is still relevant for 7_2
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.1-Manual/custom-guide/sysconfig-get-connect.html
Where you see a drop down arrow are the places where you can use ctrl-x.

Thanks I have found the place and commited the changes but when I run ifconfig eth0 it says device not found, however it is listed in modules.confI think I'll give up.
Thanks for your help

Hi,
I had the same problem and the solution (in my case) was to delete a line in /etc/modules.conf that said something like '... irq=unknown'.
Hope that help you!
Javi.

I am having the same problem, I have a PCMCIA Linksys Ethernet V3 and it is there, physically and I know that it is supported but I cannot get it to work, AT ALL. I already recieved an ulcer due to this problem. All flavors I have tried to see if it is just a RH 7.2 problem are Debian (potato), netbsd, and RH 7.1. Each gives me the same problem. Thanks for your help in advanced, all the docs online have been tried and none can get it working.

What kind of cards are those? ISA? PCI? PCMCIA? do your kernels support these?
just try to add support for the devices then recompile the kernel
just type make menuconfig in the kernel source then type make install...
I'm no linux expert, I just installed it a few days ago, but if I can help, I will!
Just email me if you want, I found this forum by accident, I don't think i'll be back :)

I have problem in my dell server (1500sc)
It doesn’t detect the built in network card on Linux 7.1 I have try to install that in manually but there is error "can't locate the module e100 which is needed for IO*fe920000”irosh

I have a Compaq-Evo computer, I istalled RedHat Linux 7.2 but it didn't detect my built-in Network Card which is "intel(R) pro/100 vm". I searched for a driver and I found one which is 11M in size, but how should I install it!! I also have istalled windows 2000 before I installed the RH linux.
Plz to help!
