Hello
could any one help me with a Networking problem.
I have RH 7.1 with 2 3c509 NIC's installed. They both worked fine under W98. But I can't get Linux to detect them. I have been told I need a Linux/3com driver, which I have got hold of. However it needs to be compiled. I tried to do this but failed. My question is could I install another version of Linux eg Mandrake/Susie that perhaps would detect the NICs and save me the trouble of all this "C" stuff. So if anybody is running a version of Linux and using 3c509's could you let me know.
Thanks for reading this

I have a 3c509 ISA running under RH 7.1, and I never compiled a driver for it.

Have a look at this:

I think that will solve your problem.

I had the similar problem with one of my computers. After lots of diff. methods, I found I had two kernel in my boot directory. I removed the correct one and my nic card came back.

I experienced a problem using two of the
same types of NICs in Linux. Seems under
some kernels, 2.4.2 and higher, the kernel
"sees" the same type of NIC (i.e. two
3C509's) as one logical address even though
there are two physical cards in the
machine. This drove me crazy when I was
trying to set up my linux router/firewall
system. I resolved the issue by using two
different types of NICs - 1 3C509 and one
Realtek (RLT). I set them up as eth0 and
eth1 using linuxconf (redhat/mandrake) and
things worked ok. Might not solve your
problem - but it is more of a workaround.

BTW - are you trying to set up a
server/firewall/router type config? If so
- I can help.. been there - done that --
long nights to get it working - but once
it's configured - you don't have to do
anything more...wonderful - up for 2 months
straight now on a DSL to local net - works
like a dream...

Let me know if this helps

The Wooky.

you cant use the pnp if you want to run 2 NIC's on linux for exampel using the machine to spare 1 adsl connection! download the configurationtools from 3com and force irq and io on both card and use the module 3c509 from the kernel, it will work.. i can allmost garante it
