Comment:

I have set up a two computer home network composed of two winME boxes. The older one is also dual booting to linux (Mandrake 7.0). I can ping back and forth and after editing inetd.conf could even telnet into my linux box (BTW I am downloading SSH for linux and both the server and client for the winME machine). My problem is I can't access them by their names, but only their IP addresses. I would like to be able to map the WinME partition on the old computer to the new one while linux is running, access them by name thru "Network Places", and map the new WinME box on my linux so I can access it over the LAN.
Thanks in Advance,
A Hopeless Newbie.

You probably need to configure Samba conf file located in /etc/Samba/smb.conf. In this file, you need to specify network properties, what group you Linux box will belong to, and other options. Re-start if you configure this way.

In response to your IP / name problem, if you
would like to institute a very simple method
to fix this, here it is.

Both Linux and Windows have a file called
"hosts". (Windows actually stole this from
Unix a long time ago.)

You can add your network's two computers to
these files in all three OSes and then be
able to ping by name.

The basic format of these files is pretty
easy, and it documented in the file itself.
On Windows you'll find it in.... (forgive me,
stretching back in my memory here) the
windows folder?

Anyway, you'll find the same thing in
/etc/hosts on the linux box.
