Reply: (edit)The fact that Linux appears to "pick up the modem" does not mean it atually enables it. I had that problem with a Hayes Modem (Lucent chip) that RH 8 would pick up BUT could not make it work, regardless of RH having "support for all Hayes modems" (as stipulated by them). Problem was, the Hayes modem I had was a WinModem unbeknownst to me. Have you check if yours is actually a winmodem? Also, try querying the modem via KPPP. If you see the modem in your hardware , appears to be configured and KPPP can not query it, most likely driver is not correct (due to winmodem, or wrong driver, etc) HTH Regards...

Reply: (edit)Try giving wvdial a go...if not send hayes commands directly to the com port (you said that linux sees your modem...right?), eg: atz OK atdt 12345678 you should hear your modem dial.

Reply: (edit)Ok I query my modem and the response i get is. atz OK .... I dont get the atdt (number). When i see the terminal status window thing it says error 15 or something like that after it calls my user name..I dont see any status on password authentication. Is there a way i can find out if my modem is a win modem without opening my box?

Reply: (edit)Try looking through the output from pcidump, pnpdump and pcidata...whatever you have installed (you may need to be root). Also looking through /proc/pci may help. You can also get info with the ati hayes command, here is an example from a modem here at work: atz OK ate1 (this turns on echo so you can see what you are typing) OK ati 56000 ati1 A97/C258 ati3 PCtel HSP56 MR 2.30-9K ati5 V.90 Try going through all the numbers from 1 upwards until you find something you can type into google.

Reply: (edit)atz OK ate1 (this turns on echo so you can see what you are typing) OK ati 56000 Ok i done this, and it comes up wuth the ate1..... Maybe its the driver i download, like i downloaded one off linmodems but i had buy it so i got the trial version with slow speed one..maybe if my connection speed is too great eg 57240kb into a 56k modem wont work. It works iwth windows modem, but maybe not with linux.

Reply: (edit)Try "ati3"...that should give you the make. best way though is to take the lid off the machine and search for the chip numbers. I've never played around with winmodems and their drivers. If you downloaded a driver then you must know the make/model in order to get the corect one!

Reply: (edit)Ok i found my modem stuff by using a program and it came up with all my stuff. This is my modem ... :- PCI CONFIGURATION INFORMATION READ: Vendor Id = 14F1 Device Id = 2F00 SubVendor Id = 155D SubDevice Id = 8D8B Revision Id = 01
DEDUCED INFORMATION : Vendor Name = CONEXANT Device Name = HSF CHURCHILL SubVendor Name = MAC OR LEGEND Modem Type = HSF WinXp InBuild Support = YES Then I used this program and i got my Winmodem Kurnel number and i download a linmodem which runs on this setting with my conexant modem. Now When i installed it said bad signiture but i doubt that has anything to do with the performance of the driver it self. THE MODEMS BUILD NUMBER = 2600. With this information , You Someone may know what type of settings i need my modem set on...Because it seems to connect and stuff, but when it says PPPD starting, it just times out after 60 seconds and redials.
Maybe this information may help...
