Hi
I have an IBM Thinkpad A21m P3 processor. I installed Redhat Linux 7.1 and loaded the drivers for my Lucent MiniPCI modem which I got at this website: http://www.sfu.ca/~cth/ltmodem/dists/redhat/
to work with kernel 2.4.2-2.

Red Hat 7.1:
Peter Rayner
ltmodem-kv_2.4.2_2-8.22a3-1.i386.rpm
My linux install says on an i686(but the i686 driver did not work, plus I wasn't sure which process is the i686).

Anyway, I decided to updrage to Redhat ver.8. The install went fine, except that my modem does not work anymore. Now I have a new kernel 2.4.18-14, and so Had to find new drivers for the modem. So I went back to the above website, and saw that they had a few drivers:

1. Red Hat 8.0:
Paul Dyke
ltmodem-kv_2.4.18_18.8.0-8.26a9-1.i386.rpm

2. Red Hat 8.0:
Paul Dyke
ltmodem-kv_2.4.18_18.8.0-8.26a9-1.i686.rpm

3. Red Hat 8:
Marvin Stodolsky
ltmodem-kv_2.4.18_14-8.26a9-1.i686.rpm

I didn't know which one I should use, and decided to try all of them. To my disappointment, when I used kppp and query the modem, I got the message "can't open modem"
So am stuck, and really don't know what to do next. I have no idea how to uninstall the installed packages for the modem, and I do not want to go back to using version 7.1. If anyone has any idea on how I can solve this issue, I would be most grateful.

with thanks
Bhagiratha

386 generally means it will run on 3/4/5/686
686 should run faster/better on a 686

cat /proc/pci - see if the modem is recognized

if kppp is using /dev/modem, try echo AT>/dev/modem - this should immediately return, showing there is /dev/modem device

Hi
thanks for your response. I tried the commands you listed but came up with the following:
with command "cat/proc/pci" , the console returned : "bash:/cat/proc/pci: no such file or directory

with the command "echo AT>/dev/modem, returned :
"bash:/dev/modem: no such device"
I don't know what else to do, any further assistance will be appreciated.
Also, i think I should uninstall the driver files and try again, but I don't know how to go about doing the uninstall. Do you know how to remove the modem files from the system?

Regards

Bernard
