I've successfully and easily installed Linux Mandrake 8.0, but i still have problem configuring 2 things.
1st: my printer: Lexmark Z12. Its driver isn't listed in the driver list at setup, anyway, i do not really intend to use it with linux, but if anyone knows how to make it work, i'd be grateful. I've tested several of the other driver, non to my satisfaction.
2nd: my modem: i've got a Motorola sm56 modem (i know... winmodem s**ks, but that's all i have) i've downloaded the linux driver from Motorola's website, but now i do'nt know how to get it to work. i copied the file to a folder on my desktop (under linux) and managed to install it simply by clicking on it, but i do not know how to get linux to detect it.
i just hope somebody can help, 'cuz linux without access to the net ain't worth it for me.
thanks in advance

Ok, had the same prob with my install...only different modem. I ended up buying a modem that allowed hardware IRQ and COM port settings which when I set linux to look for modem there it worked. This is probably where you are running into ground. You'll need to id the default com and irq, and point linux to it. so for me I set Com2 Irq3 on modem with jumpers, in linux set with "netconf" modem settings to ttys2. then you must activate and reboot for the system to take. after that run "DrakHard" in x-windows (it is a hardware utility that detects your hardware and see if it shows up. If not than try again.

Good luck, I got fed up with Mandrake and am going back to RedHat for another spin. Can't keep windows and linux happy on the same computer for long, without using a 3rd party boot manager.

I don't know how you connected to the net using Linux and a Winmodem. The only way I made it simple was to spend a few dollars. I got an external USR 5686D modem and an Epson Stylus 480SKU USB printer (forget parallel). They both installed automatically and run like tops using Mandrake 8.0.

I had no problems getting the sm56 drivers from Motorola installed under RedHat 7.1
(kernel 2.4.2). Make sure you run the install script! However, I'd advise getting a different modem. Mine has a habit of locking the machine up tight. In some instances, it has
severely abused the hd. In the ten days of using the #%@!* device, I've reinstalled the OS twice. (The last time I saw as many fdisk corrections was on a drive with a flakey cable!) I'm on my way home now with a 14.4
external from the junk pile at work until I find a REAL modem.

I have a Lexmark Z12 printer, and I have been unable to get it to work under Linux.. If anybody can tell me of a driver, it would be appreciated. I do not use dial up internet access anymore but high speed. In the past, I just used a dialup program manager and specified the COM port... Unfortunatly, I have had too many problems dealing with hardware configuration in Linux and getting ALL my hardware to work properly, so I am just sticking with Windows and dealing with it's problems as they come along.

To the person who can't get WinModems to work under linux: Please visit http://www.linmodems.org/

I have gotten several winmodems to work very well (better than in windows even). The best success rate (IMHO) is the Lucent chipset.

As for the z12 - If anyone DOES come up with a way, or a theory even, please let me know ;)

BTW: Redmondlinux works with most of the 'windows only' hardware that people tend to struggle around. http://www.redmondlinux.org
