I am a newbie in linux. I tried linux but found it very hard. I face many problems in linux which are forcing me to leave linux. Ist is that the linux(every version) didn't recognize my modem and also I can't find my modem anywhere which is(DiamondSupra 56i V Pro).2nd I am unable to install any software in linux like I do in windows. 3rd the softwares which I download for linux didn't work in linux. But the most important one is modem recognization which linux can't. Can anyone help me by telling the solutions of these problem. And also tell me the easiest linux in the universe. I used Red Hat, Phat and Winlinux but they are not easy.

Linux isn't difficult if you know what you want to do and how to do it. I found it's when you don't really know how to do somthing and just give it a go anyway. As for Windows being better, it's not. It's easier to use but then people are paid to make it easy.

Linux will work with any good harware modem such as UsRobotic. If you have external modem, you dont need any drivers.

I am sorry but Linux is not hard at all.
I'll take Linux over any version of Windows
anytime and anywhere. I don't think you
can just download a program and just double
clicking it to install! You may have to
unpack and then compile it for your Linux
box. If a file ends with an bz2 extention,
test.tar.bz2, then you have to use "bunzip2"
to unpack it, bunzip2 -d test.tar.bz2. But
if it has a gzip extension, then use "gzip"
instead, gzip -d test.tar.gzip. Then, you
probably have to unpack it with a "tar"
command, tar -xvf test.tar... Just "cd" to
that directory and read either README or
INSTALL/Install to build it for your system!Lawrence

Linux isn't pick my modem (whose name was mentioned above). I tried my best to search a driver for it but I can't find any driver. Could anyone help me by sending a patch. Please send on
usamahashimi@yahoo.com
Thanks.

If you know what you are doing...
When you are totally new to it and don't know a thing about it, it is very difficult. I tried to mess with it for a while. I was going for a dual-boot wit Win98SE and Red Hat 7.0. I made several attempts at installing it, which all appeared to work fine, until the end, where it got some error about a 1024 cylinder limit. After much frustration, I found out that LILO can't figure out how to boot if if is past a certain point on the hard drive. So, after lots more frustration, I got it setup using what I think was called LinLoad, which I used in a MS-DOS (a command line that I can actually use) batch file that I setup. But I couldn't really get much of anything to work right in Linux. Never could get my winmodem working, and a few other things I tried did work either. The only thing I did successfully was install the Opera 5 web browser. (which isn't any good without a modem) After all the problems, I just ended up formating that section of the drive and adding Windows 2000 Pro, and I never went back. Now I am left with $30 less (thanks to the worthless book I bought) and a very bad impression of Linux. Never again will I believe it when someone tells me how easy Linux is. Although I will be curious to see how Lindows turns out...
Whoa... I didn't mean to get this long-winded here...

If you knew absolutely nothing about Windows and tried to use it, it would be as difficult as Linux. After using Windows for a few years, things get intuitive. The same goes for Linux.

I agree with Jake. I installed linux several times, but then left it for a few moths because I was tired of all the reading, but I always return to it, as I get more and more frustrated from windows and all it's *nice* features, that I started to appreciate linux and I'm beginning to understand the logics in linux, and that's the point where it starts being fun...

I'm a newbie too. Installed Mandrake 8.1 on one of my systems on 3-8-2002. Never saw the OS before this. Have been using it every day since then, and have learned alot in these past 7 weeks. Also, had a Supramax (winmodem) which I swapped out for a US Robotics Performance Pro and was on the net in minutes. Software I have downloaded and is working: Opera web browser, CD Bake Oven (CDRW software), and Frozen Bubble (game). All were RPM's and easy to install. I do find that software in tar.gz form to be difficult to get working, as the instructions usually are not written for newbies, and I'm not good with the command line stuff unless of course someone tells me exactly what to type. In any event, you might want to try Mandrake. I am no expert on the subject, but have been told that Mandrake and Lycoris are the most user friendly flavors of Linux and the best for newbies like us. Bottom line is, don't give up on it. You will be glad you stuck it out.
