Does Linux have to be installed on the Active primary partition or can it be installed on a logical partition? This is my first time so I'm kinda lost, even with the user manual (go figure). I'm sure this will be the first (actually, this is already my second) in a flurry of posts so please be patient with me.

Linux doesn't require an active primary partition to be installed on.

To be more specific, install the kernel and LILO (Linux Loader) on the first or second HD. Take care to install within the first 1024 cylinders of your HD. Only the very latest LILO version are not concerned with the 1024 Cyl border. EG. if you have a windows 2000 with 8 GB partition (drive c:) already running and want to make a double boot with linux, you won't succeed. Hope this helps

I also wanted to add a quick thing or two but got disconnected from the Web... If you have a partitioning tool like PartitionMagic simply create three logical partitions: swap, equal in size to the amount of RAM you have or slightly larger; and two native Linux partitions -- /boot, the smallest possible, around 7-10Mb is just fine, and /, the size depends on your Linux distro and computing needs. Use them for your Linux installation... I am a newbie myself, but what I carried out from reading is still quite fresh in my memory! :)
Summary: kind of depends on whitch linux distro you got.But most of the newer ones (less than 18 monts old) You will have some very easy to use tools. That will help you set up your drive. Most of the time wh...
Summary: If whats on the 486 is important then I'd suggest getting another hard drive (drives under 2GB are cheap) and either dual-booting it in your good computer or getting a removable hard drive rack and a ...
