Linux Installation hangs up

OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: Intel Celeron/ 256 RAM

I have a problem at installing linux.

Firstly I boot linux, then I enter the mode to select how you want to intall linux, either graphical or text, I press enter and choose the graphical one.

Then the message comes which says "Uncompressing Linux... OK booting Kernel"

And then it hangs up. I have also tried using the text mode but still fail.

What Linux distro are you trying to install and did you purchase it or downloaded it and burned the ISO ?

I got the CD from "linux for Dummies" and the last message which I get is "Uncompressing Linux... OK booting Kernel"

I have heard about some PCMCIA things but to me that is not the problem.
