I tried to install Red Hat Linux 6.2 on my PC: 1.1Ghz Athlon, 128 RAM, IBM 30Gb, Asus ATA-100. I first installed windows, used fips to partition and partitioned 4Gb for win98. Installed Linux, which went through well. But then when Linux booted up, it gave the general protection error.
It said:
CPU: AMD Athlon stepping Disabling CPU ID serial number: General protection fault: 0000 CPU: 0 EIP: 0010: [] EFLAGS: 00010282 Kernal panic attempt to kill idle task In swapper task not synching...
I'm left with a machine which can only boot with windows... help anybody?

try booting from a floppy to see if you can access the partition. By the error message, it looks like your swap partition is corrupt. Beyond that I can't really say.
Actually, I don't know. But what I would try is enabling or disabling the CPU ID serial number in the bios, if that is possible. Because of this message:
Disabling CPU ID serial number: General protection fault

Redhat is erroneously identifying the Athlon as a Pentium, and chokes when trying to determine the CPU ID (Athlons don't have one). Here's a link with a complete description and a solution to the problem:
