dear tux

i have a redhat linux 9 server machine in my network. i am expert in win2k networks. but not in linux. what i wanted is i need to join the linux machine as an additional workstation to my existing network. i manage to set the hostname. so after the hostname where i can give the "win2k domain name" to the linux machine then the linux machine will be able to logon to the win2k domain controller as like a win2k professional station do.

please give me the command or the gui location where i can give the domain name of win2k network.
so the linux machine will browse my entire network machines as well the win2k machine will also browse the linux machine.

thank u tux's.

I don't know about domains, but to join workgroups you need to install and configure samba (also known als smb).
Maybe it is possible to login to the domain using NIS, I never tried it, so I might be wrong about that.

windows is entirely based on (S)erver (M)essage (B)locks and will not work with NIS (to my knowledge). You can mount shared smb drives (read windows shares) with smbmount (a part of SAMBA). Read the mans for syntax. In short, you need smbmount.

Samba is definitely the way to go. After
installation (it generally comes with most
distros so you should either find it
already installed or on the installation
CDs) edit /etc/samba/smb.conf (could be
etc/smb.conf) and make any neccessary
changes.

To join a domain, as root:
# smbpasswd -j DOMAINNAME

If you are looking to intergrate into an
Active Directory, download the latest
version 3 of samba.

You can either enter something like "smb://
machinename" into konqueror or nautilus to
view the shares or install something like
linneighbourhood or gnomba if you want to
browse a network.
