Linux hangs when shutting down

Ihave just installed a copy of suse 7.2 all is fine until i atempt to shut down. it reports shutting down service KDM failed and gets as far as the line. Skipped services in run level 0: and then it just hangs!! Any help would be appreciated and try to keep it simple please i'm a total Linux newbie

there is a kernel funstion to enable when your system hangs on shutdown it is usually not enabled you need to enable it i beleive it effects certain intel chip motherboards if you want to try this email me at mbrady@icubed.com teel me what chip your motherboard is and i will send you back directions oh let me know what kernel # you have as well as your email adress and remind me of your problem.
