Almost all Distros are *free*. Check out linuxiso.org for a list of good ISO downloads.

Try
http://www.redhat.com/mirrors
http://linux-mandrake.com/en

Check out the other distros too. I just listed the two I like.
I'd suggest that if you try it and like it that you also go to the store and buy it. It's one way to ensure that these companies keep going. Hell, it's only 40 bucks...even cheaper than that at some on-line stores.

...but try it for free first. Ain't that beautiful?

The only problem with getting the free version, unless you know someone who has CDs you can copy, is that it takes a while to download.

I downloaded Mandrake 9.0 a couple of weeks ago and it took numerous hours over my cable modem (don't know how long because I started it and went to bed).

Another reason to consider buying the CDs.

I have one more question.
As I said above I'm going to by a cd at www.cheapbytes.com and I'm onedering what would be the best cd to by for $5.00 or less.

(I'm new to Linux and I don't know what one is the best.)

come on...its $12!!!! however, although i read that you are new to Linux, you may regret installing a newbie OS and once learning then wanting to upgrade and have to reinstall. I went with RedHat Linux 8.0 off of Redhat's site and LinuxISO's -i had them race :-), anyways, i found that installing it was a pain in the *** so i am glad i went with the "advanced" one because now I can get lost and find my way out, which is how i learn best.
