Hi everyone,
i know linux but not very well. we are choosing which flavour of linux we should use for a startup ISP. we already have slackware and offcourse redhat..but i was thinking shifting everything to debian....as slackware is a bit old kernel and redhat is travelling towards commercialism.....so can anyone give me an advice on that from their experience.
thanks a lot.

What's wrong with a commercial distro like RedHat? Is it too easy to install or do you guys make money by fiddeling around for hours to get something to work ?

And as far as I know Debian is not really using the latest kernel eighter.

I'm allways told that in business time is money, so I want my distro to be easy to setup, secure, stable, well documented, good support and easy to maintain.

I would choose RedHat or Suze ( like most companies do ! )

I like Debian, but not for business.

I have used redhat before but i dont like it as much. I personally prefer Slackware 7.1 if you go here.. http://omegaearth.mine.nu this is my website runing on Slackwar 7.1 with kernel 2.2.16 i think.. the intersting thing is the server is a 66 mhz 486 with 16mb of ram.. and i get exellent performance.. so slackware is harder but i reccomend it over other distros.. if your going to use debian then i would say go for red hat but otherwise slakcware is a good choice (The kernel version shouldnt matter unless you have problems.

Major distro's like Suze and RH also sound
more familiar to your customers, which makes it easier to sell.

I say stick with slackware and just compile a new kernel... Kernel compilation isn't exactly brain surgery.

Thanks fr all ur advices. I think we willuse a mixture of RedHat and slackware. I have heard that debian is as good as red hat not quite sure as i don't have live experiences with both. And I will go for Kernel Compiltaion on slackware.
Thanks again friends.
regards,

iq

If you are looking got the latest kernel, then fo eith PeanutLinux(I don't really like it). Suse Linux ia the Best. get SUse 7.3 or wait for 8.0(April 22nd). Suse is definitely the best

My 2cents worth is if like it easy go mandrake (RH is becoming too much like M$) or if want slackware not for beginners (suse too close of ties to IBM and is start play games like you have to pay to get pro)
