It's not as simple as one might think. It does require some very specific knowledge. Here's a starting point, though:

Alternatively, if you have a spare old PC, you could download either smoothwall or ipcop (both are distributions to be a firewall) and it will do the hard work for you

I would highly suggest ipcop. I use it and it is a great firewall. www.ipcop.org

suggestion: instead of having a client do the network address translation, get a spare pc or and old 386, 486 or pentium (even a p2) with maybe 5gb, obtain a copy of Mandrake Single Network Firewall or Mandrake 9 (need p2 @ least). The spare pc will become, a firewall, a proxy (squid), NAT (using ipchains or iptables) and dhcp. I use Mandrake SNF @ work and its pretty good, even for our measly dialup connection...
