Linux doesn't detect network

I've had Linux installed for several days now with no problem. I was connected to the LAN at my college completely fine. I unplugged the ethernet jack from the laptop to take it somewhere, and when I came back, having rebooted the computer once w/o the ethernet cable, I plugged it back in and couldn't find the network. I reboot, hard booted, everything, but boot fails to initilize the eth0. It hangs there for a minute or two, then says FAILED and continues to boot. I've replaced the cable, so it's not that. Also, it's not the port as I've plugged in other PCs and they work.
