looking for a FREE and up to date linux distro for noobs! i am really all new to linux and want to have a stable and 100% up and running system. i have redhat 9.0 and i am having all kinds of hellish problems... can any one recomend ?
ps i want the newest kernel already in it

You could try fedora core 2.
I will be upgrading to this soon, Currently I have fedora core 1 and am having some stability problems, maybe they're fixed.

There have been problems with FC2:
http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=04/05/26/1441241
A stable, newbie suitable distro is suse 9.1 and it has kernel 2.6.4 available as an update which you can upgrade to after the initial install. You could also try Mandrake 10.

i was looking a suse but on linuxiso i think i saw that its not free, but they have an evaluation (live) version... could you maybe supply a couple of links for the full install ?
and also fd2 is running on what kernal ??
thanks all !

You can install suse via ftp:
http://www.suse.com/us/private/download/suse_linux/index.html
The 9.1 version is supposed to have been ftp-ready yesterday - check the mirrors.

I'm using FC2 right now. Not too impressed. The sound drivers just blow....I have this really loud hissing sound, and I hear others are having the same problem.
Also, be prepared to do all RPM stuff from the command line. The graphical interface only handles the stuff that's on the CD.
It's truly a developer release (as advertised), so be prepared to be inconvenienced. Admittedly, convenience is not what was promised.
I'm going to buy Suse 9.1 tomorrow morning for my work machine. To hell with the theology concerning its GPL qualities.....I have work that needs to get done.

i looked at the link you gave me, but.... me noobie to linux. i did make a boot disk and tried to install it via ftp but im sure i did it wrong,....... any help is cool. i wish i could just download a couple of ISO's but again i want free, no eval or fake ass linux. lemme know

I wouldn't worry too much about being struck down by a bolt of lightning:

I would hardly have suggested Suse if it's installer was tainted and for those of you prepared to run software like RealPlayer and download binary drivers for your graphics cards, it is pretty pointless worrying about such matters anyway.

lumpking69: You seem to be in too much of a hurry to read the instructions and the slow ftp install process will probably stretch your patience too so why not try the Mandrake 10 iso files from linuxiso.org?

well i am in a hurry, only because i am so excited that i now have a an up to date system with ample space to linux. i want to have it installed and up'n running already. but installing seems to be a hard and non-nnob task. i have been looking into mandrake as well but i read that its not free and theres a 4th disk missing..... i donno. i just wanna have a good o/s. maybe im misinformed.
thanks for everyones help tho.....

Where did you see that says MandrakeLinux is not free? Yes, you can join the MandrakeClub but you can still download the 3 ISOs for free as in download everytime you want and do whatever you want free... So, either go to http://www.linuxiso.org or Mandrake's site and pick a mirror closest to you!
taurus
p.s. MandrakeLinux 10.0 comes in 3 CDs not 4 like FC2!!!

Mandrake 10 comes with a 2.6 kernel....have
heard of people with all sorts of problems
with it though. Why not use something like
yum or apt-get to upgrade your current
redhat, you can probably even use yum to
upgrade your kernel, I know you can with
swaret in slackware....best off to compile
it yourself though.

About the Suse not being free. Novell has GPLed Yast. So besides the Flash Plugin and Nvidia drivers what is Suse is now free. At least that is what I read in Linux Devoloper magazine. It even came with a copy of Suse on the cover disc.
As for a easy starter distro . I find Fedora Core 1 is Stable Kernel 2.4
Xandros is also supposed to be easy and they just released a free download version as well.Kernel 2.4 as well. I dont think any of the 2.6 distros are stable yet. Suse might be.
I didnt have any problems with RedHat 9 . I liked 7.3 best of all though.
