Hi,

I'm looking for a Distro of Linux that will boot *and* RUN from CD. I would like to use this CD to do recovery on DOS / Windows PC's. I would like it to have the following:

O Windowed Desktop like Gnome or KDE (X-Windows by itself is a bit too crude).
O DOSEMU.
O Internet Capability with Browser (Netscape is fine).
O Access to the local FAT file systems (with Long File Name support, NTFS support would be nice too).
O Ability to connect to the local NT Based Network. Is this accomplished through Samba?
O Some sort of GUI file manager
O Wine would be nice but not necessary.

Can anyone recommened a good distro? I am a DOS / Windows user mainly, but I did use Unix a lot about 10 years ago. I thought a Linux that could be used to 'support' DOS would be a great way to go. I have looked at Knoppix but it seems to have way more than I need. Is there a way to customize Knoppix or is there a slimmer distro that would be better?

Thanks in Advance,
-Michael

While links are good, I was looking for an actual recommendation, I.E. from someone who has actually used the package they are referring me to. I know how to use Google.

Thanks anyway.

Knoppix - not sure of the url. It should have everything you are looking for but not sure of the DOSEMU.

well i use a http://sourceforge.net/projects/repairlix/

but i'm sure you've heard of http://www.kernel.org/pub/dist/superrescue/

im happy with both?

why are you using linux to repair computers
if your looking to repair make a dos bootable cd how many commands do you need?

have you looked at
http://www.winternals.com/products/repairandrecovery/diskcommander.asp

this program is bootable from a cd with a windows 2000 interface and recovers passwords and runs current programs including networking multiple partitions etc... very powerful and it boots to windows on a cd interesting? i like it?

very expensive too but if you search with imesh.com then you'll find it under
"disk commander"

Good luck

My 2 favorites are Mandrake (www.mandrakesoft.com) and Debian (www.debian.org). Mandrake looks really neat, and the people at Debian have a new, modern outlook on computer software.

They both have everything you wanted (I'm not absolutely sure about Mandrake having Wine, but I think it does) in a Linux distro.

Also, any Linux distro can connect to Windows NT networks, even participate as a PDC using the Samba software (www.samba.org) that comes with most distributions. It comes with Mandrake and Debian.

Knoppix looks like it does the trick, comes with everything I needed except for DOSEMU, which was easily downloaded and installed. Demolinux was also very good but it lacked Wine. I'm off to make my own distro now using the Knoppix FAQ.

Thanks for the recommendations!
