i have an old toshiba satellite pro 430cds and i dont want to throw it out, yet it dosent work well with windows 98se and windows 95 is too old. so i wanted to put a linux distro on it. but it is impossible to find one that is suitable. and everytime I find a suitable distro, the installation fails. it is a pentium 120mhz, 32mb ram, 2mb chips and technology video chip, ess stereo sound chip, 1.2 gb hard disk and a 4x cdrom drive. I tried installing ubuntu by booting into the cd using smart booter on floppy. it booted fine then could not verify a particular file on the cd. mandriva linux mini edition locked up, I even tried caldera (seriously OLD!) and that failed to recognise the video chip. what can I do? what linux distro is right for this pc? as long as it has a graphical interface im ok with it!

Slackware should run OK on hardware like that. Gentoo (although it would take ages to compile/install) Debian and DSL also spring to mind.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I have an old 430CDS at home running a debian based distro. Gnome and kde are slow on it so I use Xfce instead which proves to be quite useable. I'll check when I get back tonight...

I agree, Slackware is pretty lightwieght. The drivers should support your laptop if it is that old.
Siggy: Always check the manual first, Google helps too.

im going to try redhat 7 and vector linux but i also wanted to see how you can put DSL onto to harddisk of this pc. that would be ideal because DSL would include all the apps i need.
