Packages for linux, generally, are downloaded as .rpm files (these tend to be packages that are made specifically for certain distributions - eg nmap-mdk10.rpm would be the nmap program built to run on Mandrake10).

But there's also source packages which come as .tar.gz file (these are unzipped, and then a script/s executed which attempts to compile and build the program there and then for your distribution).

Have a look through the "Package Manager" in Mandrake - this is the easy way(ish) to add packages to your system.

The unreal linux files are on the last disk - I think it's called linuxinstaller.sh or something similar, which you'd run with:
root$ ./linuxinstaller.sh
or
root$ sh linuxinstaller.sh
These scripts attempt to do all the hard work for you, but source packages are a little picky sometimes. Good luck :^)

You gatta install a program called "wine" to run Windows programs. Some Windows programs've been ported to Linux. But for those that weren't, you can install wine.

For Mandrake, do this by typing "urpmi wine" in a terminal. That should install wine provided you got the right urpmi sources. If you got the Mandrake CDs, you will be prompted to insert one if you haven't changed your urpmi sources.

If you don't have the CDs, you can go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/, and follow the instructions. This will add urpmi sources so you can install stuff over the internet instead. (Urpmi is a software package installer for Linux).

After you have wine installed, you just type the exe file as it is (eg ./install.exe).

Or, you could type "wine ./install.exe."

Good luck.
