Depends on who you are, and what you like to use the computer for. :o)

A lot of things are compatible with almost all the new distros(ie redhat 7.2, mandrake 8.1, etc)

I think for those new to Linux, Mandrake is the easiest to install. It has a great install GUI
and a good desktop GUI.

Am pretty new to linux myself, & while it is quite different from what you might be used to as a windows user (like myself) once you get your head round it, it's pretty good (comes with some decent games pre-loaded too)

Linux cannot natively run Windows programs.

Linux cannot currently run windows. There are programs in process that are trying to support this type of activity (namely Lindows), but at the time of this writing it is going to cost around $100.00. You could also check out VMware which allows you to run linux but boot another operating system inside of linux (i.e. windows) if necessary. In addition there is Wine Development who is working on running windows software too. Check out all 3 of them if your really interested. Also, just curious, although im a loyal linux user, why so upset with XP? Of all the Microsoft OS's ive run, this is by far my favorite (finally something semi-stable).

My comment currently has nothing to do with linux... but I hate XP not because of stability, speed, or security [which are actually quite good], but because it reminds me vaguely of the MAC OS X GUI, with I loathe with a passion...
